Caring for Pearls
Pearls are formed in the bodies of certain mollusks and occur when an irritant enters the mollusk. Over time, the mollusk will coat the irritant with layers of protein which are called nacre. The general rule of thumb for pearl jewelry is that they should be the âlast on and first offâ. This means putting your pearl jewelry on as the finishing touch and last item of your outfit in the morning, and it should be the first thing off before getting undressed.
Your ring should be put on after any cosmetics, hairspray, or perfumes have been applied and dried. This will minimize the amount of contact your pearl has with chemicals that can harm and eat away at the nacre, which will cause the pearl to age more quickly. Do not wear the ring when washing your hands, showering, or applying any harsh chemicals like hand sanitizer, as any of those chemicals can degrade the adhesive that is used to adhere the pearl to the post and the pearl may fall out. Chlorine can especially degrade the adhesive, so no swimming with your ring as well.
Each time you remove your ring at the end of the night, itâs best to wipe the pearls down with a soft microfiber cloth in order to remove any chemicals that may be on the pearl.
